Avon Gorge House, Clifton, Bristol

3WA have designed and secured the planning consent for a exemplar innovative private house on The Avon Gorge in Bristol.

The site is situated beneath Princes Lane as a series of two terraces enclosed by tall stone retaining walls and is part of the Clifton Conservation Area. The terraces were constructed around the early 1800’s to house various structures and provide access from Hotwells to Clifton Village. In collaboration with their client, 3WA have aspired to create a design that is not apparent as a residential dwelling at first glance. In view of the sensitivity of the location, the super-insulated 5 bed house has been designed to blend in with its immediate context by facing it with the same type of rubblestone surrounding the site and using native species of planting on the green roofs. Frameless glazing is set back by 1 meter from the face of the house to create a continuous landscape when viewed from an angled distance.
